The Serval Cat / kitten – serval kittens for sale

Exotic Cattery has the knowledge and experience to produce beautiful Exotic cats. Browse our kitten’s available page for photos of the new arrivals. New arrival of Serval cat/kitten.

Serval kittens are available only to homes in legal states or to those with the proper permits. Please don’t contact us if you don’t meet these criteria. Servals are not for a novice pet owner. At least 50% of those who contact us for information end up deciding that a serval is not an appropriate pet after talking to us. While they can make great pets, servals tend to hate people that they don’t know and don’t like going to the vet. They require an outside pen. You must be sure you’ll stay in your legal state for the next 15+ years and have a plan for caring for your cat when you’re out of town.

Lots of free time is required during the first six months to properly socialize and bond with your kitten. Understand the commitment you are making! That being said, if you have some knowledge and would like to discuss it, we’re happy to help. Do not purchase a serval from a zoo! Servals should be hand-raised and loved for the first eight weeks of life; the kitten must bond with you, or it will not be a good pet. A cheap serval is not a pet serval. We hand-raise our kittens in a USDA-licensed facility where they are loved and socialized by other cats and dogs.

Do you know that African Servals were one of the first cats to be domesticated by man, thousands of years before today’s domesticated breeds were developed? They can never be fully tamed; only partial taming is achieved because most of their instincts are preserved to hunt. However, this does not make them dangerous as pets. Many argue that servals should not be pets for this reason, but the serval has been a pet for thousands of years. Today, pet servals are bred in captivity and not taken from the wild. As such, it thrives with people in the domestic setting. This belongs to a wild misconception that any spotted cat should live in the wild. Just because its ancestors lived in the wild doesn’t mean they should. Humans have wild ancestors too, but that doesn’t mean we should return to the wild.

The domestic serval is increasing in numbers and popularity as a cherished household pet. However, it’s not for everyone—only serious, responsible cat lovers who can provide large enclosures and whole-prey diets. Domesticated servals in captivity live longer, healthier lives, with access to great health care, safe enclosures, and all the amenities they need. In contrast, wild servals face shrinking habitats, increased predation, and disease. Their life in the wild lasts about five years, whereas in captivity it can last up to 20 years. Cats that have been domesticated are much healthier than those living in the wild, and this is confirmed by the greater diversity of their genes as well.

Servals are not dangerous animals. Their teeth and claws are similar in size to those of a small to medium-sized dog. There has never been a case of a serval fatally injuring anyone because they are ‘flight’ animals—they run from danger and consider humans dangerous. They are closely related to domestic cats, which is why they can breed with them, producing hybrids like the Savannah cat. States that categorize servals with large exotic cats like lions or tigers are mistaken. A serval’s personality is closer to a dog than a cat’s; it is non-aggressive and will run from a fight. They make fascinating pets.

Full-grown, they weigh in the range of 18 to 35 pounds. They enjoy high perches and are very observant and curious. You will have to ‘cat-proof’ your home, removing breakables, and anything that can be swallowed. Servants are most active during the evenings and mornings; they bond with one or two people. Intelligent, they can be trained to be more accepting of strangers if socialized from a young age. Having plenty of toys around and encouraging playtime with new people may help make your serval more social.

The serval cat is a beautiful animal that some people keep as an exotic pet. Therefore, you can keep them as Pets. Because you may be able to acquire a Serval cat/kittens from a breeder, we do not forget that they remain wild cats. Besides that, to own a Serval cat, you must create a large, secure outdoor enclosure and provide a warm environment year-round because they are nocturnal, and have been known to jump out of fenced areas or dig out under fences.. Most importantly they will need to feed on whole prey food items. You will have to receive veterinary care from an experienced exotic vet.

    Diet and Nutrition

Serval cats/kitten use their sight and hearing more than their sense of smell to find their prey. They often play with their food before eating it. Servals are highly intelligent cats. When feeding them, a game or puzzle that makes the cat problem-solve will cause the meal to be more rewarding for them (this is called enrichment).

In the wild, servals eat whatever is available, which makes providing the most natural diet as pets difficult. You may not necessarily have access to everything Africa has to offer wild servals, but rodents, rabbits, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, and frogs are all readily available to provide a varied diet of protein sources. Whole prey should be offered but don’t be alarmed if your serval eats so fast that he regurgitates everything right back up.
